Annual Technical Conference (ATC),
the premium event of the E&P sector of Pakistan, has emerged as an august
forum over the years. It was in early 1990s that the SPE-Pakistan Section
thought of such an event, and the response from the industry was overwhelming. Kasutatavus
In that first ever one day
seminar of E&P sector in 1993 there were papers from both earth sciences
and the reservoir engineering. The Chairman of the Conference was Mr. Arif
Kemal and I had the honor to present the first technical paper. That
association of the engineering and earth sciences professionals has flourished
into a well respected forum over the years. Later on PAPG was also constituted
in 1994, and both of these sister organizations decided to join hands to hold
the conferences annually. This year we are celebrating the decade of that
association.

In the early
days the one responsible for collecting the technical papers had to run
after the potential authors to first pursue them for writing a paper and then
chase them to get the final paper, so that the proceedings could be published.
And I remember there would be barely 10 odd papers, and the last minute
drop-outs used to cause panic, where some professionals had to come up with
their hurriedly prepared papers to fill the gap.

The scenario, however, has
gradually changed. If we look at the last three years there were as many as 22
abstracts received in 2000 and were published as such. In 2001 barely sixteen
abstracts were received and all of them were published. But in 2002 as much as
40 abstracts, covering not just the technical side, as before, but on HSE,
human resources, E&P laws etc., were received and the Technical Committee
selected 27 papers for publication. Summary of four of the selected papers from 2002 Special
Proceedings was published in the April, 2003 issue of JPT Magazine, and the
Editor of AAPG Bulletin informed that the proceedings have been listed in
their technical library. That was a unique achievement for the ATC forum. Another
important happening in the ATC’s history was the addition of an Oil Show in
2002 that was held in parallel with the conference, and was a great success.
The Chairman of Technical
Committee, as they say, has now emerged from a ‘beggar’ in not so very
distant past to a ‘chooser’ today. This year we had an unprecedented
response from the industry and over 80 abstracts were received, out of these
about 50 papers have qualified to be published. The paper writing culture
seems to have very much ingrained in Pakistan’s E&P sector, and now we
can afford to be stricter in our selection of papers.
I wish you an enjoyable stay
in Islamabad, and technically satisfying three days.
